Furniture Care Tips

Follow the tips listed to help keep your wood furniture looking its best for a lifetime of enjoyment.

  1. DUST furniture frequently. The best cloth to use (to clean and polish) is soft cotton (or cotton blend) that has been washed several times to remove lint. Old cloth diapers, T-shirts, flannel or cheesecloth are some of the best.
  2. CLEAN UP spills immediately! Liquids allowed to stand on wood furniture may cause irreparable damage. Do not use paste wax, acetone base polishes or caustic materials on this furniture.
  3. POLISHING. We recommend polishing once a month or every few months depending on the amount of use your furniture gets. Over-polishing is the main cause of damaged finishes.
  4. AVOID placing furniture in direct sunlight.
  5. AVOID extremes in room humidity. Too high or low humidity can cause wood to warp and/or split, or the glue used in applying veneers to loosen.
  6. AVOID extreme changes in temperature. Arrange furniture away from radiators, registers, and air-conditioning units.
  7. ROTATE your accessories on the furniture so they do not sit in the same place all the time.
  8. DO NOT place plastic or rubber objects on a wood finish - their ingredients may react with those of the finish.
  9. USE pads, cloth or felt to protect surface from plastic, rubber, hot dishes, beverages, bookends, flower pots, vases, etc.
  10. USE a protective pad when writing with a ball-point pen.
  11. LIFT objects when moving them. Do not drag them across the surface.
  12. MAKE minor repairs while problems are still small.
  13. AVOID containers with standing water.
  14. DO NOT place fish tanks or other excessively heavy objects on your furniture. They can cause irreparable structural damage. When moving your furniture from one place to another do not push or pull, but have another individual help pick furniture up to move it.
